Lake District trip/ School project

Favourite activities:

At SCHOOL MY FAVOURITE THING WAS WRITING MY FABULOUS MAGAZINE ABOUT ULLSWATER.

ANOTHER THING THAT I ENJOYED AT SCHOOL WAS SPENDING THE AFTERNOON AT EATON PARK MAP PLOTTING, EATING IN THE café, PLAYING ON THE CLIMBING FRAME AND WATCHING A REMOTE-CONTROLLED BOAT ON THE WATER.

ON THE TRIP MY (FIN, PERSON WHO WENT TO ULLSWATER) FAVOURITE PART WAS WHEN I WENT TO A FACE OF A CLIFF AND MADE IT TO THE TOP TWICE ,ON MY SECOND ATTEMPT i had to do it ONE HANDED AND, I MADE IT HALF WAY UP AND THEN I HAD TO USE BOTH HANDS IF NOT I WOULD HAVE FALLEN AND INJURED MYSELF ON THE WALL.

I ALSO LOVED IT WHEN WE WENT GORGE WALKING WHICH IS A CHALLENGING ACTIVITY WHERE YOU HAVE TO WALK UP A WATERFULL WHERE YOU HAVE TO TRUST YOUR GROUP.

TIMELINE:

Monday morning:

At 4 am Fin woke up from his delicate meandering sleep whilst Seb was sleeping.

At 8.40 Seb arrived at school on his own, listening to music,at this time, Fin was playing Uno with Daniel and also eating after eights.

At roughly 1 pm Fin arrived at Ullswater National Park enthusiastic for the week ahead, at the same time Seb was having his lunch it was meatballs.

At 1.30 Seb started making a delicious chocolate cake with Mrs. R.

Tuesday:

Fin woke up with a start at 7 am whilst Seb was eating his Coco-pops.

At 1pm Seb was eating his lunch with Praise as Fin was hiking up a mountain.

Wednesday:

At 7 am Fin was woken from his delicate slumber by a gentle knock, at this same time, Seb was sleeping.

At 1pm Seb was eating a roast whilst Fin was doing another activity.

At 1.30 Seb left to go to Eaton Park, Fin was still rock climbing.

At 8 pm, Fin was map reading in the dark with the head torches on a plot of land that was 17 acres large .

Thursday:

At 7am Seb was still sleeping as Fin was woken at a start by a knock .

At 1pm Seb was eating like always as fin was climbing up a fast moving waterfall risking his life.

At 8pm Fin was writing an important letter to the head of Ullswater National Park informing him about the issues of climate change as Seb was watching TELETUBBIES.

AT 3AM FIN WAS AWOKEN BY THE FIRE ALARM AS SEB SHOOK HIS HOUSE AS HE SNORED.

FRIDAY:

AT 7AM FIN WAS AWOKEN AGAIN AS SEB WAS STILL ASLEEP.

AT 1PM SEB WAS EATING HIS LUNCH FIN WAS SHIVERING IN ULLSWATER LAKE.

AT HALF 2 FIN BOARDED HIS COACH TO LEAVE ULLSWATER WITH A SINGLE TEAR IN HIS EYE AS SEB WAS FINISHING OFF HIS COMIC.

My Trip to Lake District by Brendan.

So I had the pleasure to go on a trip to Ullswater in Cumbria. We stayed at the lovely Outward Bound centre for about 5 days. We had a theme of teamwork in all of our activities. We were told about  the Roman Handshake method to stop our hand from slipping off and falling. My favourite part was when we did the jog and dip in the river and it was so cold. If I went back to Ullswater, I would have more confidence in myself and i’ll try even better at the activities.

Week 9. Coding at St. Francis!

At St. Francis, we use two main Coding programs – ‘Espresso Coding’ and ‘Scratch’.

Please see the ‘Espresso Gallery’ here  http://apps.coding.discoveryeducation.co.uk/?site_id=13401      for some apps to try, created by Y4 and 5).

Please use the links below to find work uploaded to the ‘Scratch’ website itself,  for work we submitted last year to link to the school opera with which we were involved – ‘A King’s Ransom’.

Week 6 – Science focus. Two truths and a lie. Can you spot the lie?

  • You need a light pull in the bathroom to avoid getting water on switches.
  • If you eat or drink poison it will act like medicine.
  •  You need an oxygen tank when diving in the sea.                                                                                                                                                                                                            Martha 6HW

Two Truths and a Lie. Which one is not true?

  • Space is completely silent.
  • Less than 5 per-cent of the world’s oceans have been explored.
  • Mars has a big red spot which is a storm.                                                                                                                                                                                              Poppy and Laura 6HW

Year 5 and Year 6 Thrilling Technology!

Years 5 and 6 have been having some very exciting sessions of ‘STEM games’ and ‘Robotics’ in the last couple of weeks.

Year 5 children had to work together in teams to find solutions to the tasks set, in the fields of Science, Maths, Technology and Engineering and Year 6 had to program some VEX robots (using a version of ‘Scratch’, a program with which they are familiar) to make them move round a course without knocking over blocks and some even managed to make their robots ‘dance’!

A lot of noise ensued(!), but some great thinking was done too and they all had to draw on all their skills of resilience, perseverance and encouraging others to tackle the tasks.  Thank you to Jenny and Seb who came to run all the sessions, under the auspices of Norfolk County Council’s ‘Educator Solutions’.  There were some particularly well-engineered cranes and interesting labelling of organs within the body!

Comments often heard from the children during the sessions ‘Wow!’, ‘Coo!’, ‘Yes!’

Comments from the children after the sessions:

Poppy – “It helped you learn about how robots are controlled, what they can do and the instructions you have to give them.”

Milly – “I liked the challenges we had to do and I think this is a very good experience for me and others.”

Julia – “The Robotics session was a great learning experience for me as I got to learn about robots.  It was great fun to program robots and make them do a variety of things.  It has inspired me to do more programming and I really enjoyed the session.”

“I really enjoyed the Robotics because it was ICT in something else – to do with robots instead of just coding on a computer.”

“I really liked Robotics because it was something I’ve never done before and I liked programming it.”

Olivia “I really enjoyed the Robotics and at the end, if we’d done everything, we could create a dance with them.”

Anni – “I enjoyed the fact that we tried a lot to move it through and make sure it doesn’t hit and it was really fun.”

Kuba – “I really liked the Robotics because they give us a better understanding of programming in the future if we get a job.”

Oli – “I really enjoyed the programming and the challenges.”

Week 5 – We are all similar, we are all different.

Lots of us completed the language poll challenge this week.  We have many different languages represented in our school, as many children have links to other countries and some have even visited those countries.  For example, we have children with links to Poland, Ireland, Spain, India, countries in Africa, the Philippines and so on.

The review below was about a book which was enjoyed by a Year 6 child.

A BOOK REVIEW ON ‘THE EXPLORER’ by Katherine Rundell

This book has a lot of writing that would help with your school education on literacy/writing. Some words in the book are hard to understand, so if you’re reading the book keep a dictionary nearby. It is an amazing adventure book and it is even recommended by Jaqueline Wilson! Since it is a really good description, you can see the image that the author had in your head, whilst you’re reading it.

‘A King’s Ransom’.

This exciting new opera, for which we are one of only four chosen schools in the County, has just been launched in school with a special assembly.  Genevieve (Stage Director) and her team from ‘Into Opera‘ came to present the idea to the whole school on Tuesday afternoon (26th September) and now work can begin in earnest!

Singing, Acting, Set design, Choreography and Lighting are only some of the areas which are involved in putting on an opera and all the children will have opportunities to create work around the main story, which centres on Sherwood Forest.

These are photos from the launch assembly.  Keep your eyes open for more news coming your way during the project, which will last for the next 15 weeks.

Our choir sings at the O2!

On Monday 6th February, the school choir travelled to London to join with hundreds of other children as part of the ‘Young Voices’ 2017 Season of concerts.  They sang a huge range of songs, including various medleys.  They performed very well and had an excellent (if rather long) day!

The children kindly sang us a selection of numbers from their favourite medley in assembly on Friday.  Click on the excerpt below.

One of our chief bloggers, Olivia, interviewed some of the choir to see how they felt about their big day.
